Champion Trees of Pennsylvania
For more than 50 years, conservationists associated with the Big Tree Program have been seeking out and documenting the grandest trees in Pennsylvania.
Who are we?
The PA Champion Tree Program is a part of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association (PFA), the nation’s oldest grass roots state organization devoted to forest conservation. Its membership spans private forest land owners, foresters, loggers, forest industry, academia, government agencies, and anyone interested in sustaining Penn’s Woods. The mission of the PFA is to "promote forest stewardship to ensure forest sustainability to benefit all Pennsylvanians, now and into the future."

They work diligently to preserve and promote these living icons and to educate people about the key role big trees play in sustaining our forests and our environment.

The Champion Tree Program is one of many resources PFA provides to Commonwealth citizens. Finding, measuring and nominating big trees is an enjoyable outdoor hobby.

Big Trees of Pennsylvania Register
The PA Champion Tree Program's main asset is the Big Trees of Pennsylvania Register. This is a listing of the large trees that have been submitted by PA citizens and verified by foresters and volunteers. The register has nearly 2,000 specimens and is growing all of the time.
The largest tree of each species is considered the "State Champion." However, every large tree of every species growing in PA will be considered for addition to the state register (with a few exceptions). Large trees provide tremendous ecological and cultural value to our landscapes, and our goal is to be a repository for information on those trees.
Any PA State champion that is eligible to be a National Champion will be submitted to the national register run by American Forests.
